Memorial Day is a Federal Holiday celebrated on the 4th week of May. For many, it signifies that Summer is just around the corner. Usually, the weekend is celebrated with family cook-outs, beach trips, and even a shopping spree. We have come to know Memorial Day as a day of relaxation and enjoyment, but what is it really about?
For starters, Memorial Day is a holiday celebrated every May and was initially known as “Declaration Day”. Shops and businesses are closed to allow the relatives of the fallen soldiers to pay respects and decorate the graves of soldiers who died during the Civil War. Memorial Day is one of only two holidays celebrated in America to honor the people who risked their lives in the armed forces, the other is Veteran’s Day.
Although the real essence of the holiday when it was first started was to grieve the death and the loss of a loved one brought about by war, Memorial Day is considered by many as the unofficial start of summer because of the holiday’s close proximity to the month of June. As such, the modern Memorial Day is filled with celebrations akin to summer parties and cook-outs are only some of the modern-day celebrations of the holiday. As much as many of us would want to have our Memorial Day traditions, this year will be a bit different. Here are a few fun ways you can safely spend the Memorial Day weekend.
