What Donation Centers in Portland Will (and Won’t) Take

You want to donate. That’s great. But before you load up the car or schedule a pickup, it’s worth knowing what Portland-area donation centers actually accept — because the rules vary more than most people expect.

Here’s a practical overview so you don’t waste a trip.

What Most Donation Centers Will Accept

Across the board, most Portland-area centers will take gently used furniture that’s in good, clean condition: couches, tables, chairs, dressers, desks, and bookshelves. Working appliances are generally accepted too — refrigerators, washers, dryers, and small kitchen appliances, as long as they’re functional.

Household goods like dishes, cookware, lamps, and decor are usually welcome. So are tools, sporting goods, and building materials in usable condition.

What Most Donation Centers Won’t Take

This is where people get stuck. Common rejections include mattresses and box springs (very few places accept these), broken or heavily worn furniture, non-working appliances, paint and chemicals, and construction debris.

Items with stains, rips, pet damage, or missing parts are also turned away. Even if something looks “fine” to you, donation centers have condition standards they enforce at the door or at pickup.

Portland-Area Donation Options

Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts furniture, appliances, building materials, and home improvement items in usable condition. They offer pickup service for larger items, though there’s typically a fee and items need to be accessible.

Community Warehouse focuses on household essentials for families transitioning out of homelessness. They maintain a specific “most-needed” list and accept items by appointment. Great if your items match what they need.

Union Gospel Mission offers free pickup for many household items, but excludes mattresses, box springs, and building materials.

Goodwill and Salvation Army accept a wide range of household goods and clothing at drop-off locations. Pickup availability varies.

ReBuilding Center specializes in building materials, doors, windows, cabinets, hardware, and architectural salvage. Items must be uninstalled and on the ground floor for pickup.

When Donation Doesn’t Work

Sometimes the stuff you have just doesn’t qualify. Or the pickup windows don’t work. Or you’ve got a mix of donatable and non-donatable items and you need it all handled at once.
