How to Prepare for Junk Removal or Donation Pickup

You’ve booked the appointment. Someone’s coming to pick up your stuff. Now what?

A little preparation goes a long way — it helps the job go faster, keeps the price accurate, and makes sure nothing important accidentally ends up on the truck.

Walk Through and Decide What Goes

Before the crew arrives, walk through every room and clearly identify what’s being removed. If you’re doing a full garage cleanout or estate cleanout, it helps to separate “keep” items from “go” items. Move anything you want to keep to a different area or mark it clearly.

If you’re not sure about certain items, set them aside and ask the crew during the walkthrough. They’ve seen it all and can often help you decide.

Clear a Path

The easier it is for the crew to access and move items, the faster the job goes. If the junk is in a back bedroom, make sure hallways are passable. If it’s in a garage, clear enough space to walk around. If it’s outside, make sure the crew can get a dolly or cart to the items.

This isn’t about deep cleaning — just making sure nobody has to climb over a pile to get to another pile.

Separate Valuables and Documents

Check drawers, cabinets, and storage containers before the crew arrives. It’s easy to forget about important documents, jewelry, photos, or small valuables tucked inside furniture. Pull those out ahead of time.

If you’re clearing an estate or a parent’s home, this step is especially important. Take an extra pass through dressers, nightstands, desks, and closet shelves.

Know What Can and Can’t Be Taken

Most junk removal companies — including us — can take nearly anything: furniture, appliances, yard debris, construction materials, electronics, and general household items.

What we can’t take: hazardous materials, paint, chemicals, gasoline, propane tanks, and medical waste. If you’re not sure about something specific, ask when you schedule.

For Donation Pickup Specifically

Donation centers have stricter requirements. Items need to be in good, clean, functional condition. Stage them in an accessible location — most pickup services need items in a garage, driveway, or ground-floor room. Check the organization’s specific guidelines before the pickup day.

Day-Of Tips

Be home for the initial walkthrough and quote. Point out everything that needs to go. Mention anything heavy, awkward, or in a difficult location so the crew can plan accordingly. And if you’re adding items to the job after the quote, let the crew know — the price may adjust based on additional volume.
